Portable generator FAQs
What is the difference between maximum (surge) watts and rated watts?
The rated watts number on a portable generator means how much power the unit can continuously provide. Maximum watts is the power that the generator can create for a short time, such as when the motor is first started. Think "cranking amps" like in a car battery.
Can the generator be used in bad weather?
It's possible to use a portable generator in a variety of temperature environments, but keep it protected from the elements to prolong its life. When exposed to the weather, portable generators are like any piece of equipment in that they can get rusty and short out when not protected.
Can I run the generator inside if I vent it?
Never run the generator inside a closed space, even if you vent it. Portable generators were created to be run outside, where it fumes can be adequately exhausted.
What kind of generator do I need?
To figure out the kind of generator that will meet your needs you need to know what you plan to power with the generator and get a total of each item's start, run and peak usage limits.
To get the maximum run time, plan to run your generator at half of the rated wattage. This also ensures that when your largest appliance kicks on it doesn't trip the circuit breaker on the generator.
